WHY MIGRANTS ARE LIKE SHEEP BEING LED TO THE SLAUGHTER
Like a lamb being led to the slaughter, so are many migrating overseas. The major differences are, that they are forced to move for whatever reasons, the move was anticipated and when it finally happened it appeared like having fresh air. Now don’t get me wrong, migration is beautiful, I did too. Perhaps we should say it’s a different stroke for different folks.
Probably we have been destined to be here. Long ago we came in chains, the economies and infrastructures of these beautiful nations were built both on our sweat and natural resources. Right now, it’s like a breakthrough to be here, special services are organized for migration breakthroughs, and our families rejoiced as it looks like God finally picked the family call.
Of course, there are a few exceptions to my argument but it looks like the breakthroughs are going to be a trap for the unsuspecting or careless one. The money would be gained, and a decently run society would be enjoyed but sanity, family life, morals, godliness, and the likes would be lost.
Recently, I was on a bus with a physically challenged woman and her daughter. One thing lead to another and the daughter was yelling seriously at her mum. It was so embarrassing that the bus went so silent beyond normal. All eyes were on both of them but everyone had to mind their business. The girl should be about twelve. The law got her covered at least publicly. There is little the mum can do as you don’t want your daughter looking depressed in school. You will be invited to explain yourself.
My son often creates scenes each time we go shopping. There’s always something he wants to buy. Now imagine, I can only talk to him politely even though he’s being naughty. No chance to spank him a little, a knock on the head, or even roll the ears. I can’t do that because I don’t want to serve time in prison or have my son taken away from me. This scenario is hard for an African.
I’ve been privy to two cases, one with the school authority and the other with the police. The parents who are Nigerians are under watch. Imagine treading carefully with your child because you don’t want any bad reports about you from your child.
Fact, kids here are quite impressive when it comes to academics, sports, career, work ethics, etc but on other non-cognitive issues, you have to look elsewhere. One Sunday in church, a child of about four years was disturbing the whole service, running around and rolling on the floor. The mom was visibly frustrated but guess what? All she can do is “talk to him” and carry him on a few occasions.
What am I driving at? I’m driving at the helplessness of people that think they have it all figured out. Nothing has been figured out yet. There’s a deep cry for help from the inside but the outer aesthetics keep denying the fact that there is fire on the mountain.
Migrants like me must not merely see these places as havens or places of final rest. We must consistently ask ourselves about the value we are bringing to the table. Values beyond tech, or workplace skills. Values in terms of personality, beliefs, life perspectives, and godliness most importantly.
