HOW TO FIGHT DEPRESSION WITH REFLECTIONS AND GRATITUDE.
It is generally easier to remember our misery than to remember of victories. This is the same as it is easier to stay poor while being comfortable or rich will require deliberate effort. Now let me ask you my reader, what are the things you are most grateful for? Have you gotten to a point where breathing looks like your entitlement instead of a gift from God?
Forgetfulness is one of our biggest enemies in the fight against depression. Before you talked about your unfruitful search for a good job or poor health, have you considered things or privileges you have that others don’t? Some folks are even insane, they cannot recognize that they are sick and therefore they cannot even seek remedy on their own.
A depressed heart cannot get cured of disease because he’s too pessimistic about getting on his feet. Thanksgiving is a good way to comfort ourselves and encourage our hearts even during visible disturbances. You have to deliberately remember something good, something positive, let go of grudges, forgive yourself of past mistakes, and decide to live the best of your life with the days left.
Finding joy during visible disheartening situations is mostly fueled by the Holy Spirit of God and this Spirit is only available to those who have surrendered their lives to God through Jesus. What this means is that you embrace the forgiveness that God gives and an offer of a fresh beginning. Scars of the past may yet abide but you move undeterred, resolute to set your soul free.
Gratitude and thanksgiving help to reposition our hearts to see something positive, a reason to keep believing, and the needed energy to navigate through life. I hope that in spite of what you may be going through at the moment, you will find a memory that’s so pleasing to think about.
In the form of actionable steps, why not make a list of the positive things around you? It may be as common as being alive, having food on the table, having friends around, having a job even if it’s not your dream job etc. Think about these things more than you think of your problems.
Cheers.
