HOW INFLUENCER CULTURE IS SHAPING THE MINDS OF THE YOUTHS

I remember over 15 years ago when I was in Primary 5. I sat at the front, and that very day, my social studies teacher walked into the classroom and wrote on the board: “Culture is the total way of life of people.” Simple enough, yet it holds layers of meaning. That experience was as clear as distilled water in my memory because the teacher was my favorite teacher back then in school.

So, let us reframe the topic: “Influencer way of life in Nigeria: motivating or misleading the youth?”  According to Engel et al. (2024), social media influencers are individuals with large followings who shape attitudes, fashion, and behavior. They are not just online celebrities; they are role models and lifestyle templates many young people emulate.

UNICEF reports over 60 million social media users in West and Central Africa, with a rising youth presence. Influencer culture can be a blessing or a roaring demon draining time, esteem, and resources.

Take “Peller,” Habeeb Hamzat, a 20-year-old whose online antics stir fights and controversies. A school dropout makes millions, and he fuels the “education is a scam” narrative. In my view, his vulgar and immoral content misguides youth.
Similarly, Priscilla Ojo’s recent lavish wedding has set unrealistic relationship standards for many young women, distorting their view of love and commitment. And when a boy told me Zazzu (Habeeb Okikiola) was his role model, I shuddered. Violence, drug use, and crime should never be aspirational.

Yet, influencer culture isn’t all about the downsides of it. Doctor Egemba Chinonso, “Aproko Doctor,” uses his platform to educate millions on health. His content motivates people to make better life choices. Taooma (Maryam Apaokagi) creatively portrays modesty, African parenting, and values through comedy. Influencers like Olalekan Adeeko, Khadijat Yusuff (Genial Kids), Steven Ndukwu, and Peace Itimi make learning engaging and accessible, helping youth develop skills and knowledge at their own pace.

Influencers are like road signs; they can guide or mislead. The challenge lies in discernment. Young people must learn to filter what they consume online, maximizing the benefits while sidestepping the traps. Parents, teachers, and mentors have a key role in helping them navigate social media wisely.

Conclusion
In today’s digital age, influencers don’t just influence; they shape identities, aspirations, and destinies. The question is, will they light the path forward or lead the youth astray?” Trust me, these youth are watching every single detail.
